2 AGRIBUSINESS – 270 – THE TRADITIONAL PLOT

The traditional plot remains the standard way of growing vegetables at home. The whole of the area is cultivated and the plants grow mostly in rows, apart from a small patch for permanent plants such as asparagus or rhubarb. Strips of bare earth are left between the row or group of rows so that the gardener is able to walk along for watering, weeding, feeding, picking etc. The planting or final thinning distance between the seedlings in the rows and between the rows is sufficiently large to enable the plant to develop to its full potential. By this method and the longest beans, the heaviest cabbage and the largest  onions are produced, and the textbooks (including this one) assume that you are going to follow this method when giving you cultural instructions.

Despite its popularity the traditional plot may not be the best methos of growing vegetables for you, unless you want to grow bigger vegetables than your neighbour or want to win a price at the local show. It is extremely laborious – the tramping down the soil along the pathways means that there is the chore for digging over the plot at every autumn.
