Economic aspects of drip irrigation

• In the first-year investment costs between 2,000 and 3,500 $ per ha

   This depends on the kind of farm and soil (complete system without pump)

• Pronounced economies of scale for larger units

• For short crops in the following years only costs for the tape drip hose

• In the case of permanent cultures, the lifetime of the drip system

 

Size of the plant: 5 ha.  Investment for drip irrigation: $ 10,000 until 15,000 $

Harvest time of the culture: 8-9 years

A. With normal drip irrigation:

Average harvest per year 3: 3 t / ha, year 4-9: 9 t / ha = 57 t in 9 years per/ha

Price: 2.50 $ local quality         2,50 $/kg x 57.000 kg = 712,500 $

9 years ./. 9 = 79,166 $ per year on 5 ha means 15,833 $ per ha is 1,58 $ per m²

Price: 4.00 $ Export- Quality, 4,00 $/kg x 57.000 = 1,114,000 $;

9 years ./.9 = 123,777 $ per year on 5 ha means 24,555 $ per ha is 2,55 cent per m²  

 

B. With T-tape SUBSURFACE DRIP SYSTEM: Average 18 % more harvest

Year 2: 2 t / ha, year 3: 4 t / ha, year 4-9: 10 t / ha is 66 t in 9 years

Price: 2.50 $ local quality 2,50 $/kg x 66.000 x 5 = 825,000 $;

9 years ./. 9 = 91,666 $ per year on 5 ha means 18,333 $ per ha is 1,83  per m²

Price: 4.00 $ Export          4,00 $/kg x 66.000 x 5 =  1,320,000 $

9 years ./. 9 = 146,666 $ per year on 5 ha means 29,333 $ per ha is 2,94 cent per m²  

Conclusion:

With T-Tape instead of normal Drip system:  + $ 206,000 proceeds in Export quality

But also you save 50 % of water and 50 % of motor energy cost in this 9 years
